2013 Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) Field Mission

The Integrated Precipitation and Hydrology Experiment (IPHEx) is currently in progress and runs from May 1, 2014 to June 15, 2014.  Three HAR instruments are flying on the NASA ER-2: HIWRAP, CRS, and EXRAD.  This will provide an unprecendented view of precipitation with 4 frequencies ranging from X to W-band. The ER-2 is based at Warner Robins AFB in Georgia and the IPHEx mission control and network is based in Asheville, NC.

The HIWRAP conically scanning Doppler radar will be joining the Hurricane and Severe Storm Sentinel (HS3) Global Hawk mission for its last year starting Aug. 15, 2014.  HIWRAP will be mounted underneath of one of the unmanned aircraft to measure precipitation and wind vectors during the North Atlantic hurricane season.
